Mark Wholey studied art and design at Butera School of Art in Boston in 1965 before moving to California, where he earned a BFA in sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1990.  He remained in California teaching art and working as a graphic designer and where his art and sculpture was featured in several group exhibitions. After a two months apprenticing with a sculptor in Padova, Italy, he decided to move to Umbria in 1994 where he continued his art work as well as helped design and restore old stone farmhouses. For ten years, he exhibited work in Florence, Padova, and Cortona before returning to Warren, Rhode Island in 2003.
